Book author:

Description of the book

Currently, you can drown in a sea of information on UNIX and Linux, so we decided to use this book to chart our course and meet the needs of system administrators, thereby occupying a very specific niche in the ecosystem of various kinds of man pages, blogs, magazines, books and other reference materials. Firstly, this is a manual that discusses the various components of the main administration systems and the principles of their collaboration. In many cases where we have had to choose between different implementations of an idea, we have described the advantages and disadvantages of the main options. Second, this is a quick reference that contains everything you need to know to perform common tasks on various versions of UNIX and Linux. systems. For example, the ps command, which displays the status of current processes, supports more than 80 command line switches (options) on Linux systems. But just a few key combinations satisfy 99% of a system administrator's needs (see Section 5.7). Finally, this book focuses on the administration of enterprise servers and networks, i.e. on the serious topic of system administration. It is not difficult to install an operating system on a separate computer; it is much more difficult to maintain stable operation of a virtualized network environment under heavy loads, disk failures and deliberate attacks. Therefore, we describe methods and practical methods that will allow you to “lift” “fallen” networks, as well as choose solutions that will remain relevant as your site expands and becomes more complex and its heterogeneity changes.

Books.
I believe that the most important tool for acquiring system administration skills is books.
There are no special faculties teaching “administration” - everyone learns this on their own. Through trial, error and pain, losing important data through various misadventures.
At the beginning of the journey, it is difficult to decide what to read - after all, the array of information is so huge!
In this post I want to collect the most important and significant works for system administrators.
The bias will be on *nix administration, but I hope the topic will be of interest to Windows colleagues and in the comments they will fill in my gaps.
The post is subjective and reflects only mine own experience- I will tell you about the books that helped my development.

1
I'll start with the book that inspired me the most.
On one of the forums where I communicate, I once wrote very emotionally: “This is the most must-have of the must-haves I know.”
Humor, banter and useful experience - this book has it all. My favorite author, and I will return to his works.

I advise people shouting “bzda rip” to go through the forest.
This book is worth reading.

2
The following work is difficult to describe in a nutshell - it’s simply the *nix admin’s bible.
At one time I did not let this book out of my hands, and now it is a “desktop” book.
A colossal experience is outlined, her necessary read read and read.

Authors: Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, Trent R. Hayne, Ben Whaley
Title: “Unix and Linux. System Administrator's Guide"

For myself I I bought her in the original.
The writing language is very complicated, but immediately +100 to English.

3
Now let's touch on networks.
This book was extremely helpful to me in understanding the basics.
The first part describes in detail the fundamental things - what an IP address is, a MAC address, the basics of routing, how to calculate a subnet mask without a calculator and much, much more.

4
The next book is also on my shelf, but, to be honest, I didn’t get through it.
The people I asked about “what to read on the internet” loudly recommended it.

Authors: Victor Olifer, Natalia Olifer
Title: “Computer networks. Principles, technologies, protocols"

In my opinion, it’s better to take the CCNA Exploration course (available on the Internet in flash), which does a great job of breaking down everything in its place.
But I still have to mention it.

5
Back to Michael Lucas.
For general development the following books will be very useful.
The first book about OpenBSD. A stunning OS in its simplicity, security and completeness.
Only there I finally appreciated the full power and usefulness of the man command.
There was a time when this OS was on my home server and the book was an important help.

The second one is about NetFlow.
Useful text in the author's amazing style.
If you want to know what kind of traffic you have, be sure to read it.

6
Now let's go over specific, but not useless, topics.
If you are involved in setting up/supporting MySQL, then you need to have this book on hand.

Authors: Baron Schwartz, Peter Zaitsev, Vadim Tkachenko
Title: “High Performance MySQL, 3rd Edition”

There are a lot of subtleties in setting up the subject.

7
Mail servers, where would we be without them?
This book has helped and continues to help in many ways.

Authors: R. Hildebrandt, P. Ketter
Title: Postfix. Detailed Guide"

8
Continuing the topic, I will suggest a couple of books about IP telephony.
The first is about Asterisk, the most complete and best source of information on this IP PBX.

By: Russell Bryant, Lief Madsen, Jim Van Meggelen
Title: "Asterisk: The Definitive Guide"

Just recently I bought it on Amazon in paper, I’m as happy as an elephant after a bath.

And if you are planning to learn FreeSWITCH, then you cannot do without this book.

9
I believe that every *nix admin should read this work from the pillar of all Unix.
I have never seen so many cool tricks and tips anywhere else.

By: Brian W. Kernighan, Rob Pike
Title: "Unix. Software environment"

10
I’ll brighten up this cozy *nix/networks/etc circle with a book on Windows administration.
Not everyone will agree with me, but I consider it useful and it helped me a lot at the start.

Thank you for attention,
Write in the comments about your favorite books - I will add to the post.

By: Noah Gift, Jeremy M. Jones
