Humor and satire provide a good opportunity to express your opinion without resorting to open and harsh criticism, although satirical remarks can also be very caustic. And if all this is part of a fascinating story, then the reader will definitely pay attention to it. The novel by Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov "The Golden Calf" is just such an unforgettable mixture of exciting adventures and humor. This is a roguish novel in which the writers continue to recount the adventures of Ostap Bender, which began in The Golden Calf. Here a lot of attention is paid to the personality of this particular hero, and he evokes sympathy, despite the fact that he is a swindler.

This time Ostap Bender is on the hunt for very real wealth. He pretends to be the son of Lieutenant Schmidt, collides with other adventurers, with whom he goes on a long journey in order to get a large sum. According to the scheming of the fraudster, the millionaire will give the money himself, but the millionaire is not so simple, and the plan has to be adjusted. This entire path is accompanied by interesting and funny events through which the realities of Soviet life in the early 30s are shown.

With the help of images of heroes, curious incidents and sharp remarks, writers show the shortcomings of people, social foundations of that time. The work was perceived ambiguously, some critics were dissatisfied with the caricature of the intelligentsia, someone did not like the fact that the swindler and fraudster turned out to be too charming a hero. Now the controversy has died down, and readers have the opportunity not only to see the life of Soviet people, but also to enjoy the exciting adventures of a talented swindler. Many phrases from the novel have become aphorisms that can now be heard literally at every step.

About the book "The Golden Calf" Evgeny Petrov, Ilya Ilf

The genre of the novel by Evgeny Ilf and Ilya Petrov "The Golden Calf" is defined in different ways: a roguish novel, a social satire, a feuilleton novel. Indeed, the work contains the continuation of the adventures of the irrepressible Ostap Bender with his passion for easy enrichment, and a satire on Soviet society in the 1930s, and ridicule of human vices. The novel by Evgeny Ilf and Ilya Petrov was repeatedly filmed, and the phrases from it became winged and entered popular culture.

The Golden Calf is the second book about the adventures of the great schemer Ostap Bender. The lust for profit again drives the charming hero forward. This time he decided to pretend to be the son of the revolutionary Peter Schmidt. However, not only he came up with such an idea. Shura Balaganov and Panikovsky also want to get money thanks to the name of the famous "father". United by Ostap into one team, they find the driver of the car, Adam Kozlevich, and together go to Chornomorsk, where, according to Bender, a real underground millionaire lives. The path from the city of Arbatov to Chernomorsk partially runs along the route of the Moscow - Kharkov - Moscow rally, and the team of the Golden Calf heroes joins its ranks, calling themselves the crew of the Antelope car.

The participation of Ostap Bender's team in the off-road rally of his vast homeland is a fascinating story about how heroes, with their cunning and ingenuity, get themselves gasoline and provisions. But it ends when the heroes approach the goal of their journey - the millions of Alexander Ivanovich Koreiko. It is deadly to be rich in Soviet times, especially when your fortune was acquired through fraud. Therefore, Bender sees nothing reprehensible in deceiving a deceiver. But getting the cherished suitcase with money from Koreiko is not an easy task even for the sly Bender.

The novel The Golden Calf is a satirical novel, replete with many allusions and reminiscences. Here there is a cross-talk with the novels of Dumas, Leskov, Bulgakov and Olesha. There are countless parallels with Soviet reality: communal life, fashion and scarcity, the first cinemas, ceremonial painting and much more. That is why the novel by Yevgeny Ilf and Ilya Petrov became cult, and its main character, the rogue Ostap Bender, was not included in the number of antiheroes, but thanks to his charm and love of life, readers fell in love.

Chauffeurs love good roads.

Is life really wonderful, or does it just seem to me?

The weather favored love.

What a time now has come -
They stopped believing in God.

- Why do you eat so much?
- I need to have fun.

Damn it, a new life is growing before our eyes!

All major modern fortunes have been acquired in the most dishonorable way.

Have you read The Golden Calf by Ilf and Petrov? Any educated person will say: "Of course I read!" We will say: "Of course we haven't!"

Because until now, The Golden Calf was not published in full and not in the form in which the authors wrote it, but in the way in which it was “allowed” by Soviet editors and Soviet censorship.

Two years ago, for the first time in history, a complete edition of The Twelve Chairs was published. Now - also for the first time in history - the full version of The Golden Calf is being released, restored by famous philologists David Feldman and Mikhail Odesskiy. The reader learns that the novel did not begin at all the way we used to read. And it didn't end like that either. A different version of the final part will be included in the appendix to the publication.

And from the preface written by D. Feldman and M. Odesskiy, it will become clear that the history of the creation of "The Twelve Chairs" and "The Golden Calf" is itself an exciting detective novel, which fully reflected the political life of the country at the end of the 20s - early 30s.

The novel consists of three parts.

The action of the first, entitled "The Crew of the Antelope", begins in the office of the chairman of the executive committee of the city of Arbatov, where Ostap Bender comes under the guise of the son of Lieutenant Schmidt. An attempt to financially benefit from an imaginary kinship with a revolutionary leader almost ends in failure: at the moment of receiving the money, the second "lieutenant's son" appears - Shura Balaganov. Soon the adventurers, called by the authors "baby brothers", get acquainted with the driver of their own car, Adam Kozlevich. The heroes decide to go to Chernomorsk, where, according to Balaganov's assurances, a real Soviet millionaire lives. This wealthy citizen must, according to the plan of the great schemer, voluntarily give him money. At the exit from Arbatov, the number of passengers increases: the third "son of Schmidt" - Panikovsky, joins the fellow travelers. The route followed by travelers partially coincides with the line of the Moscow - Kharkov - Moscow rally. Once in front of the lead vehicle, the heroes provide themselves with gasoline and provisions for a while. After a series of adventures, they enter the city where the "underground Rockefeller" lives.

The second part, titled "Two Combinators", tells about the confrontation between Ostap Bender and Alexander Ivanovich Koreiko - a modest employee who keeps ten million rubles in a special case, obtained through numerous financial frauds. Bender uses different methods to confuse his opponent. When all attempts to hurt Koreiko fail, Ostap founds the office of Horns and Hooves to cover his actions and began a detailed study of the millionaire's biography. The folder with the inscription "The A. I. Koreiko case" brought in by Bender is gradually filled with incriminating material, and after a long bargaining, Alexander Ivanovich agrees to buy all the documents in it for a million rubles. But the transfer of money is disrupted: during a gas attack exercise in the city, Koreiko mingles with a crowd of people wearing gas masks and disappears.

About where Koreiko is hiding, Bender learns from Zosia Sinitskaya: during a walk, a girl who was once courted by a millionaire mentions a letter she received from him. Alexander Ivanovich reports that he works as a timekeeper on a train laying rails. This information prompts Ostap to resume his pursuit of wealth. On the way, Kozlevich's car crashes. Walking takes a lot of strength from the heroes. Finding that Panikovsky has disappeared, his comrades-in-arms go in search of him and find Mikhail Samuelevich dead. After his funeral, the companions part.

In the third part of the novel, entitled "A Private Person," the great strategist travels to Koreiko's new job, the Eastern Highway. The meeting of opponents takes place in the Northern packing town. Realizing that it will not be possible to escape from Bender through the desert, Alexander Ivanovich gives him the money. Ostap accompanies their receipt with the phrase: "The dreams of an idiot have come true!" After a series of unsuccessful attempts to spend a million, the hero decides to start a "working bourgeois life" abroad. However, all the preparatory work, which included the purchase of currency, gold and diamonds, turns out to be in vain: the Romanian border guards take away Bender's money and jewelry. Deprived of wealth, the great schemer returns to the Soviet coast.
